As a color, beet red is traditionally associated with uncomfortable emotions. Colloquially, the shade is used to describe the flushed face of anger or embarrassment. Despite these associations, however, this bright shade of red is a mainstay of fashion, cosmetics and even home design.
Red is one of the earliest recorded colors used, with roots in prehistoric art by the ancient Egyptians, Mayans, Roman and Chinese. During the Renaissance era, it became associated with nobility and in the early 1900s, it became the color of revolution in communist countries. Western countries associate red with love and passion, while it’s considered a lucky hue among Asian nations. If you’re not sure how to wear beet red, you’re not alone. This color is as tricky as it is popular, especially when it comes to choosing clothing and cosmetics. If your complexion has warm undertones, choose a red with hints of warm orange and browns. Cool complexions look better in cool “true reds” with blue undertones.
When wearing beet red, you can’t go wrong by making it the statement shade in an otherwise neutral outfit. As with skin tone, match clothing undertones for a put-together look. Feeling brave? This shade of red looks vibrant and on-trend when paired with earth tones like mustard yellow and camel, metallic silver and just about any shade of pink.
